Abstract

Objectives: The recent development in materials replaces automotive and aerospace components with composites. Among composites, natural fiber composites play a vital role due to their properties like bio-degradability, low strength to weight ratio and ease of manufacturing. Method: In this work, sisal epoxy hybrid composite was fabricated by hand layout process. Initially, releasing agent is applied on the top surface of the mould over which Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) is placed. On GFRP, apply resin hardener mixer over which sisal is placed. Again GFRP layer is kept on sisal. Findings: The result shows that, breaking load of double shear test is increased from 1.02 to 1.43 kN. Hardness value increased from 76.2 to 88.2. The results of inter de lamination test also increased from s 7.96 to 8.52 kN. Above results proved that composite with equal fibre ratio of glass and sisal (50:50) has improved the mechanical properties than composite with minimum percentage of sisal fiber. Applications: The material developed is suitable for automotive bumper application. Also, it may be used as partition and load carrying medium in railway and marine application.

Abstract

Objectives: To find the important parameters that affects the performance output (i.e.) to boost the Material Removal Rate (MRR) of the workpiece. Methods: Electro–Discharge Machining (EDM) is a thermal based machining process which is used to remove ‘hard to cut materials’ with complex shapes. The principle with the EDM or spark eroding machining is that the unwanted materials are removed with the repeated current discharges between cathode and the anode, separated by a dielectric fluid and is subjected to an electric voltage. Findings: This paper investigates in optimizing the process variables of EDM by employing a traditional technique. The parameters chosen for optimization are pulse on time, pulse off time followed by the current and L9 Orthogonal Array (OA) has been selected to examine the impact of the process variables on the performance i.e. on the material removal rate. The experimental trials have been done on AISI D2 die steel with positive polarity and brass has been chosen as an electrode material. Applications: Mainly, the EDM are employed to machine difficult to cut materials like nickel base super alloys, titanium etc.

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this paper is to find the optimal machining parameters of Die-Sinking Electro-Discharge Machining on Inconel 825 alloy with nickel coated copper electrode for improving the process response. Methods: The effects of different parameters were studied on the machining responses. The machining parameters considered for this work were applied current, pulse on time and pulse off time and their effect on surface roughness response was studied. Findings: Taguchi optimization technique was employed to find the effect of machining parameters on Electro-Discharge Machining process responses. Besides, analysis of variance statistical method has been employed to predict the importance of individual machining parameters in the responses. The result of this research reveals that the proper selection of the input variables plays an important role in die-sinking EDM process. Applications: Ni base alloys are widely used in aviation, ship building and defense industries because of their better properties such as good impact strength, high ultimate tensile strength, high yield strength, high resistance to corrosion, retaining the strength even at high temperatures and fatigue resistance.

Abstract

Objectives: The scope of this work was to: 1. to fabricate Silicon Carbide (SiC) particle Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) by vortex method; 2. to investigate the effect of SiC particles on the tensile and impact behavior of SiC particle reinforced 6061 aluminum alloy composites. Recently, the material technology has seen many contemporary developments in the field of fabricating new materials which reinstates the current materials for different applications. Amidst these, the composite materials have an important aspect which is a combination of different materials possessing various physical and chemical properties. Methods: This Aluminum base metal Matrix Composite (AMC) has been manufactured by wrought aluminum alloy by varying the weight fractions of silicon carbide to compose five distinct forms of composites. Stir – casting has been chosen as the manufacturing technique, in this study. Findings: The manufactured composites were tested to determine their tensile and impact properties and the result proves that the sample with higher percentage of silicon carbide has better mechanical properties, comparably. Applications: This study essentially focuses on establishing AMC as they find applications on aerospace and automotive industries because of their admirable properties compared with the unreinforced alloys.

Abstract

Objectives: In this analysis, natural fibers like, Jute, Kenaf and hemp; Jute and Hemp (mixture) Hemp and Kenaf (mixture), Jute and Kenaf (mixture) are invented with bio epoxy stick abuse forming system. This work, affects quality of Hemp and Kenaf (mixture), Jute and Kenaf (mixture) and Jute and Hemp (mixture) composite at dry and wet conditions were examined. Abstract

In order to sustain in present competitive market, on-time delivery, excellent quality and aesthetic are very much essential. The objective of this paper is reducing the cycle time of assembly of automobile door trim panels by implementing various modernized techniques using lean manufacturing concepts. It is evident from the past reports that in the existing system the cycle time is more and it has poor aesthetic. Here a leading automobile company's front door panel assembly is considered and the assembly line is modernized and automated to reduce the cycle time and to improve the aesthetic. The outcome of this paper leads to substantial reduction in cycle time, reduced cost of maintenance, reduced defects, better utilization of machines and man power. Statistical quality control is carried out on the new method of welding joints. The result shows that the process is under control. Also, the proposed system is validated for its increased productivity and for return on investment (ROI). It has been proved and validated by an empirical relation. The improved return on investment (ROI) and productivity shows the method of performing welding is feasible.

Abstract

Now a day's companies are in great pressure to reduce costs, increase flexibility, improve quality and cut down on lead times. Companies are thus turning their attention to implement lean. This has created urgency to apply new tools and techniques to reduce various wastes. This paper deals with applying analytic network process (ANP) to select the best manufacturing process in an industry. Lean manufacturing (LM) is one of the techniques which is used in the manufacturing industries especially in large and reputed industries. Most of the medium and small-scale industries are not aware of lean manufacturing. This paper aims to show the advantages of lean manufacturing over computer integrated manufacturing system and traditional manufacturing system by comparing among the alternative. For that we have chosen seven criteria's to compare these manufacturing systems with lean manufacturing system. ANP is a mathematical tool which is used to make decisions when the situations are in critical. The decision is made among the three manufacturing system and it shows that the lean manufacturing is best among the alternative. This result is done by using super decision software.

Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a new innovative solid state joining technique for joining similar and dissimilar metal which has been used in aerospace, rail, automotive and marine industries. This paper to optimized the effect of the tool shape and welding parameter on 6.35mm thick 7075- T651 aluminium plates. The process parameters are optimized by using the ANOVA technique based on L₉ orthogonal array. Experiments have been conducted based on three process parameters, namely, the tool rotation rate (rpm), welding speed and axial force at three different levels. Impact Strength has been predicted for the optimum welding parameters and their percentage of contribution in producing a better joint is calculated, by applying the effect of the signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance. The results indicate that the rotation rate (rpm), welding speed and axial force are the significant parameters in deciding the Impact Strength of the joint.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to develop an operationalized model, which can be used to access the changes taking place in an effort to introduce lean manufacturing system. We limited ourselves to the factors that concern the work organization in the manufacturing part of the company in order to develop an operational model of lean production. To bring the single piece flow assembly system, we have applied the principles of ergonomics, plant layout, and time study in this paper. These different principles have been elaborated using available theory behind the lean production system. The production system concept of process flow, plant layout, material flow, ergonomics and work place organization were integrated as a whole system in the plant. With the adaptation of above stated concepts, the assembly line became lean and also the productivity of the assembly line is comparably increased with the existing assembly system by 167%.

Abstract

Nowadays, composite materials are supplanting conventional materials because of their upgraded properties. Various research works suggest that composite materials have better properties when contrasted with the existing materials that are for the most part utilized in the automotive and aviation sector. This paper proposes the fabrication and investigation of the mechanical properties of ecofriendly waste plastic-based composites. In this work, the essential fortifications in particular are waste polypropylene and nylon 6,6 utilized in various compositions. The composite at different compositions was tested for structural integrity through compressive strength test and Izod impact test, assessed as per ASTM standards. The result shows that the addition of nylon 6,6 as reinforcement along with polypropylene increases the mechanical properties with the highest value of 2.53 kN for the compressive strength test and 4 joules for the Izod impact test.
